Tinidazole is in a class of medications called antiprotozoal agents. It works by killing the organisms that can cause infection.Tinidazole comes as a suspension (liquid) prepared by the pharmacist and a tablet to take by mouth. Tinidazole (2 g single oral dose) use in trichomoniasis has been well documented in 34 published reports from the world literature involving over 2,800 patients treated with tinidazole. In four published, blinded, randomized, comparative studies of the 2 g tinidazole single oral dose where efficacy was assessed by culture at time points post-treatment ranging from one week to one month, reported cure rates ranged from 92% (37/40) to 100% (65/65) (n=172 total subjects).

Tinidazole is also being evaluated in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections in people with low-grade gastric lymphoma. It is partly metabolized by oxidation, hydroxylation and conjugation. It is the major drug-related constituent in plasma after human treatment, along with a small amount of the 2-hydroxymethyl metabolite. It is used to treat trichomoniasis (a sexually-transmitted disease), giardiasis, and amebiasis. It is also prescribed for other types of infections.
Prohibition

Tinidazole should not be taken during the first three months of pregnancy. Tinidazole can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tinidazole (or Fasigyn) is an anti-parasitic drug widely used throughout Europe and the Third World as treatment for a variety of amebic and parasitic infections. It is chemically similar to Flagyl -- a drug with some unpleasant side effects that is used in the United States as first-line therapy for amebas. It has similar side effects but you don’t have take it as long.

Tinidazole demonstrates activity both in vitro and in clinical infections against the following protozoa: Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia duodenalis (also termed G). It does not appear to have activity against most strains of vaginal lactobacilli. It is excreted in the urine mainly as unchanged drug (approximately 20-25% of the administered dose). Approximately 12% of the drug is excreted in the feces.

Tinidazole 50 mg/kg single dose and metronidazole 15 mg/kg three times a day for seven days were given orally to children. Parasitological cure was documented when there was 3 times negative stool examination for giardiasis at 1-2 weeks after therapy. Tinidazole was determined by the agar-diffusion technique using a strain of Clostridium bifermentans . Reliable estimates of concentrations down to 0.5 g/ml could be obtained.

Tinidazole is as effective as metronidazole in the treatment of infections caused by trachomoniasis.
