Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Inflammation causes soreness and swelling. Hepatitis A immunization is given in a series of injections. Acute hepatitis B virus infection is a short-term illness that occurs within the first 6 months after someone is exposed to the hepatitis B virus. Acute infection can but does not always lead to chronic infection.

Hepatitis C is spread through the exchange of blood or blood products. It is spread through sharing needles and needlestick accidents. Hepatitis C is diagnosed by a blood test. However, blood tests conducted in routine physicals do not include tests for hepatitis C. Hepatitis is caused by a number of things including alcohol, drugs, chemicals, and viral infections. If the inflammation of the liver continues at least six months or longer, it is called chronic hepatitis.

Hepatitis C is a serious, often chronic and potentially fatal disease that afflicts approximately 4-5 million Americans and is the #1 reason for liver transplants. Many of these Americans are health care workers that were exposed to infected patients. Hepatitis C can be sexually transmitted, but this is thought to be uncommon. It can be passed on through sharing toothbrushes and razors. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is transmitted from person to person through blood or other body fluids.

Alcoholic hepatitis is a complex problem and is a precursor to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. If an individual develops alcoholic hepatitis and abstains from drinking, the inflammation is often reversible over time. Alcoholic hepatitis has been established as an important precursor to the formation of cirrhosis.

Persons with chronic hepatitis have a greater chance of getting certain types of liver disease, such as cirrhosis (hardening) of the liver and cancer of the liver. Persons with hepatitis A can spread the virus to household members or to sexual partners. Casual contact—as in the usual office, factory, or school setting—does not spread the virus.

Inject or snort drugs or have done so in the past. The risk increases if you share needles, straws, pipes, spoons, cookers and other drug equipment which could be contaminated with blood. Injecting drugs using shared syringes or equipment is the leading cause of hepatitis C, and the majority of people who inject drugs are infected.
